Online Dating Etiquette
Since its introduction for public use, individuals have utilized the internet for various functions. These include online banking and long distance communication with friends and loved ones in faraway places. The internet has lately also became a haven for people interested in a different kind of social relationship: online dating.
This kind of dating, despite its online nature, is in fact very similar to normal dating. It could be considered somewhat as a prelude to actual dating. But unlike actual dating, online dating allows one free reign without the usual background check.
Because of this, a need for a set of rules governing online dating etiquette arose. Online daters in various sites have formulated such rules which vary from site to site. However, the main points of this online dating etiquette remain the same.
Etiquette for Dating Online:
1. Online dating etiquette places emphasis on looking for a potential partner. Nobody’s perfect. One should be flexible once in a while, but should not be too gullible as to date online with someone who obviously does not make the flame burn.
2. Social rules dictate that in a date or in a relationship, honesty is the best policy. Online dating etiquette would dictate the same. A person should not lie to a prospective partner when dating online. Being himself/herself is all that matters.
3. Be polite. When replying to someone who doesn’t perk your interest, you should send a simple message stating that you are disinterested rather than not replying at all. One should refrain from pointing out the other person’s deficiencies as this would be offensive, and obviously violates online dating etiquette. Politeness is also a must when contacting a person for the first time. A simple wink and a “hi” would suffice. Politeness will also go a long way.
4. Respect other persons’ decisions. One should avoid being persistent if a person has already said “no.” Online dating etiquette dictates against upbraiding a person for refusing advances. If a contact ignores messages and does not reply to emails, it means he/she is not interested.
5. A person looking for a date should not attempt to link up with someone whose requirements he/she obviously doesn’t satisfy. For example, a 50 year old man should avoid contacting a woman looking for someone 23-30 years of age.
6. Online dating etiquette stresses the importance of taking things slowly and easily. Like in all things, online dating follows a natural progression of things. One should take time to get to know a prospective partner better. Refrain from asking too personal things in the early stages of the courtship. Attempting to speed things up in online dating is likely to end up in disaster.
7. Commitment is important in both actual and online dating. One should avoid taking offers from other people once he/she has chosen someone to spend the later parts of his/her life with. Online dating etiquette implies that one should discontinue his/her online dating account after hooking up with someone as a sign of commitment.
